The 10-minute check you can do yourself before you call us
Simple things to look at on your first visit to the car.
Coming soonA working mechanic checks the car before you pay for it. You get a scored report with a photo of every fault, the moment we finish.
Sellers clean the car. They don’t always tell you its history. These are the three things buyers most often miss.
Fresh paint and a good polish can hide a repaired accident.
We look for mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps and signs of repair underneath.
If the seller has a loan against the car, the lender can have a claim on it after you buy.
We run a PPSR check: finance owing, written-off and stolen status.
Engine and gearbox problems don’t always show on a five-minute drive around the block.
We scan for fault codes, check for leaks and take the car on a proper road test.
Choose your inspection, tell us where the car is, and pick a day and time.
Your booking is confirmed by WhatsApp and email, with a reminder 24 hours before.
A working mechanic goes through every check, photographs each fault and road tests the car.
A score, the key findings with photos, the PPSR result and a valuation guide.
The price is the same whether we come to the car or you bring it to us.
Everything that matters most: safety, major mechanical items, tyres, brakes, and signs of accident or flood damage.
Everything in Standard, plus detailed checks of the body, underbody, engine bay and interior.
No mechanic talk. Every item is rated Good, Fair or Poor, and anything that isn’t Good comes with a note and a photo.
Car Check Mates runs from the Midas workshops in Bundoora and Greensborough. The mechanics who inspect your car service and repair cars every day, so they know which faults are cheap to fix and which ones should make you walk away.
No. Tell us where the car is and who has it, and we arrange the visit with the seller. Your report is sent to you as soon as we finish.

The car is newer, has a full service history, and you mainly want to be sure it is safe, sound and has nothing hidden in its past.
The car is older, has higher kilometres, costs more, or its history is patchy. More checks and twice the photos give you a much closer look.
Call us with the ad open in front of you. We will tell you honestly which inspection makes sense for that car.

On-site inspections at Midas Bundoora and Midas Greensborough. Same price.
We work for the buyer, we show you every fault, and we fix cars for a living.
Car Check Mates is a new business. The people behind it have spent years servicing and repairing cars at Midas Greensborough, so we see every day what goes wrong with used cars and what it costs to fix.
We started Car Check Mates because buyers kept bringing us cars after they had already paid for them. A proper check before the sale would have saved them thousands. Now we do that check first, and tell you plainly what we found.
Every inspection is done by a mechanic who services and repairs cars every day, not by a salesperson with a checklist.
We run from Midas Bundoora and Midas Greensborough. Bring the car to us, or we come to it anywhere in Melbourne.
Every fault in your report comes with a photo, and the PPSR check shows finance owing, written-off and stolen status.
We are not connected to the seller or the dealer. Our only job is to tell you the truth about the car, in plain English.

A roadworthy certificate shows a car is safe today. A pre-purchase inspection tells you what condition it is really in. Here is what each one covers, and why most buyers need both.
The ad says “comes with RWC”, so the car must be fine, right? Not quite. A roadworthy certificate is useful, but it answers a different question from the one most buyers are asking.
In Victoria, a roadworthy certificate (RWC) is needed when a registered car is sold, when a car is re-registered, and to clear some defect notices. It is issued by a licensed vehicle tester, and it is usually arranged and paid for by the seller.
The tester checks the main safety items:
A roadworthy is current for 30 days from the day it is issued.
The Victorian Department of Transport says it plainly: a roadworthy inspection “doesn’t tell you if your car is mechanically reliable or what the general condition of the vehicle is.” It does not cover items that are not about safety, such as air conditioning or electric windows, and it can’t promise that the parts it checked will keep working after the test.
That means a car can pass its roadworthy and still have:
A pre-purchase inspection is done for the buyer, by a mechanic the buyer chooses. Its job is to tell you what you are really buying, so you can decide whether to go ahead and what to offer. A Car Check Mates inspection covers:
| Roadworthy certificate | Pre-purchase inspection | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | Legal requirement to sell or register | The buyer |
| Who usually arranges it | The seller | The buyer |
| Safety items | Yes | Yes |
| Mechanical condition and reliability | No | Yes |
| Non-safety items (air con, electrics) | No | Yes |
| Finance, written-off and stolen check | No | Yes, PPSR included |
| Photos and a written report for you | No | Yes |
Usually, yes. The roadworthy is the seller’s job and lets the car be transferred. The inspection is your protection. The best time to book it is after you have seen the car and before you pay a deposit or sign anything. If the inspection finds problems, you can walk away or use the report to negotiate the price.

A $2 search that can save you thousands. What the PPSR shows, how to search it, and what to do if the result is not clear.
Before you pay for a used car, there are three things you want to be sure of: nobody else has a claim on it, it has not been written off, and it has not been reported stolen. The PPSR check answers all three.
The Personal Property Securities Register is the Australian Government’s national register of money owed against personal property, including cars. When someone borrows money against a car, the lender can register its interest. A vehicle search also shows whether the car has been reported written off or stolen.
A registered security interest usually means a lender is owed money against the car. If you buy it and the debt is not paid, you could have a serious problem. Don’t hand over money until the seller shows you, in writing from the lender, that the loan has been paid out, or until the lender confirms how the payout will happen on the day.
A written-off record means an insurer decided the car was not worth repairing after damage, such as a crash, hail or flood. Some written-off cars can return to the road after repair and inspection, and some can never be re-registered. Either way, it changes what the car is worth, and the repairs need a close look.
If the car shows as reported stolen, do not go ahead. Walk away and contact the police.
We run the PPSR check as part of both the Standard and the Premium inspection, and the result appears on the first page of your report, next to what the mechanic found.

Turn the faults in your inspection report into a fair, confident offer. A simple method, a worked example, and the items that should make you walk away.
An inspection report is not only a pass or fail. Used well, it is the strongest tool you have to agree a fair price, because every point is backed by a mechanic’s note and a photo.
Ask any workshop for a written quote for the “fix now” and “coming soon” items. A real quote is much more convincing to a seller than a guess.
Your report includes a valuation guide showing trade-in, private sale and dealer ranges for similar cars. If the asking price is already at the top of the range and the car needs work, you have a strong case.
Show the seller the relevant findings and photos, explain the repair quote, and make a clear offer. Keep it friendly: most sellers genuinely did not know about the faults.
Asking price: $15,900. The report shows front brake pads and discs needing replacement (quote $450) and two rear tyres with low tread (quote $320). The valuation guide puts private sales for similar cars between $14,500 and $16,000.
A reasonable offer: about $15,100, the asking price less the repairs, which still sits inside the private sale range. The seller can accept, meet you in the middle, or fix the items before the sale.
Some findings are not about price. Think very carefully, or walk away, if the report shows:
In Victoria, a licensed dealer must give a statutory warranty on a used car that is under 10 years old and has travelled under 160,000 km. It lasts 3 months or 5,000 km, whichever comes first, though some items such as tyres and batteries are excluded. Even so, the best time to raise a fault is before you take delivery: ask the dealer to fix it, in writing, as part of the deal.
You also have a cooling-off period of three clear business days after signing with a licensed dealer. Cancelling during that time can cost you $100 or 1% of the price, whichever is more, and you lose the right to cool off once you accept delivery.

Great cars are sold on Marketplace every day, and so are scams. The warning signs to look for in the ad, on the phone and at the car, and a checklist before you pay.
Facebook Marketplace and other classifieds are full of good, honest private sales. They are also where scammers and dodgy sellers look for buyers. Here are the signs we tell our own friends and family to watch for.
